How to Take Great Family Photos

Summer is here and it seems like perfect moments are happening every day. Baby’s first day at the beach, first Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, the kids catching fireflies, that beautiful sunset over the bay. We want to capture it forever in photos. But how many times do we take 300 pictures only to find none of them work? How many times are we let down when we go back to look at the perfect moments and the photos don’t live up to the moment.

We wanted to settle this once and for all, so we asked local photographer Amanda Wose to give us some tips on how to capture those moments. THE RIGHT WAY!

What is the best time of day to photograph: “I prefer to photograph at sunset when light is most warm and dreamy, but excellent photographs can be created at anytime of the day! Simply look for open shade outdoors or when stuck inside, pose your subject near a large window.”

What is a good quality camera, not overly expensive or will a nice phone work well? “Can’t answer that one, sorry! When it comes to camera gear, not only do you get what you pay for, but there’s also extensive education that contributes to the end result. A professional photographer could make stunning images with a $400 camera, while a novice may not even be able to operate a $4000 one. I highly recommend utilizing whatever gear you already have and learn to use it well for the everyday moments, and hire a professional for the milestones and significant events.”

How do you get kids to look at the camera? “You have to give them a reason to look at the camera. Be silly! Ask them to tell you a joke, do a funny dance, or even better, YOU tell them a joke or dance a funny dance. I love to photograph kids because I get absolutely ridiculous while photographing them, and it works every time. But whatever you do, do not tell them to sit still and say cheese!”

How often do you recommend photographing kids: “Great question! The younger the child, the more frequently I like to photograph them because they grow and change so quickly. From newborn-one year, I like to see my clients every 2-3 months. From ages 1-3 aim for twice a year, plus this is a great age to start participating in those adorable themed mini sessions! From age 3-8, this is the GOLDEN era for child photography and really capturing who the child is becoming. I’d plan for one themed portrait session per year for each child (this experience makes an amazing gift!) that is ALL about them. Maybe your daughter would love a princess session, or perhaps your son has a beloved hobby that he’d enjoy showcasing. These are my absolute favorite type of session, and they’re so fun and empowering for the kids. As always, plan for an updated family portrait once a year!”

How can moms get in more photos: “This one is so hard, and something I struggle with as both a mom and a photographer. Honestly, selfies are great for the day-to-day, and I’m a huge proponent of the selfie. One of my biggest goals is to help moms exist in photographs, and I love to style sessions just for their moms and their kids. However you do it, I cannot overstate the importance of being photographed, whether with your children or even a portrait session just for you. One day, your children will come looking for photographs of you. What will they find?”

To me it’s important not only capture the everyday moments, but also to document the milestones.  I want to capture the essence of my kids at that time and that calls for a professional. These times and moments are fleeting, capture them forever. Amanda is currently running a awesome summer mini session. Go check it out!
